Area description

Benta Berri means "new sale" in Basque. Named after an old inn and cider house that was located in the area.

Venta Berri (its former name) grew starting from the last third of the XIX century, apart from a small group of houses, as the industrial area of El Antiguo. Here there were located among other famous factories "Cervezas el León" (Keler beer) "Chocolates Suchard" and "Lizarriturry y Rezola" (soap brand known as Lagarto).

However industrial activity started disappearing in the late XX century, either because the companies moved out of town or because they closed.

Once industrial activity ceased, a comprehensive urban redevelopment in the area was done in the 1990s. Industrial buildings as well as the small set of the original houses were demolished and the current neighborhood was built. This is a residential neighborhood. It is considered the expansion district of El Antiguo itself. Since its construction it has been consolidated as a complementary activity centre for the previously consolidated El Antiguo and also serves as a service centre to the close district of Ibaeta. It is a young and dynamic area, which besides an important residential function it also has a service industry. This district has many restaurants and bars, shops and there is a multiplex.
